HTC One

It's big. It's bold. And people are talking about it now that they have one in their hands

The HTC One is finally out there in the hands of the people who have been waiting and wanting, and they have a lot to say about it. It's One fine piece of Android-powered equipment, and the HTC One forums is the place you want to be to talk about it. Here are a few examples of what's going on.

Of course, you'll probably want to read our HTC One review as well if you haven't already. What better way to spend a Saturday evening than talking about a great new Android phone?

Google removes 32 apps from Google Play over malware concerns

Malware

Apps contained a "fake" ad network, directed users to install malware disguised as free applications

Yesterday, the folks over at Lookout divulged their latest find. 32 applications, mostly Russian language, were found to contain what Lookout calls "BadNews" -- a new piece of code that facilitates easy installation of malware onto users phones who have it installed. They estimate that apps containing BadNews have been installed over 2,000,000 times. While this is but a small drop compared to the hundreds of millions of Android devices and 25+ Billion apps installed from the Play store, it's still quite the eye popping number.

BadNews is disguised as an ad network. Besides serving ads for other less popular apps containing the BadNews code, it has the ability to send some of your private data (including your phone number and IMEI) to a server. It also displays fake news messages about app updates and links to actual malware that a user could install outside Google Play.
The offending applications, distributed across four different developer accounts, have been purged from Google Play. If you think you may have been affected, or are running one of the apps, Lookout's security application can assist in identifying the things you need to remove.
We appreciate a well researched and legitimate look at malware like this news, and don't want it to get buried like the so many FUD stories around the Internet that are speculation with no numbers. For a list of the applications, and a look at how this was discovered, click the source link below. Carry past the break for some further discussion.

Apps of the Week

It's been a whole week since our last crop of app picks, so let's get to it

Every week we take to the "Apps of the Week" post to let everyone know the apps the Android Central writers have been using on a daily basis. If they're good enough to stay on our devices out of all the apps we try, they must be doing something right -- and that's why we take this weekly segment to share them with all of you.

So what are you waiting for? Click or tap along after the break and see what we have in store for you this week.

Quick Look: The Black Mist Samsung Galaxy S4

Android Central

At the IFA Global Press Conference 2013 in Sardinia, Samsung brought along the Black Mist Galaxy S4 to show the gathered press

I'm on the gorgeous Italian island of Sardinia this week, for the annual pre-IFA Global Press Conference. A chance for the industry and the press to get together and look ahead to the main show in Berlin in September, in a truly stunning setting. Several consumer electronics manufacturers have partnered with the conference, including Samsung -- well, Samsung Electronics, at least. So, what's this we see here, then? Looks an awful lot like the Black Mist Galaxy S4. Nestled front and center in the Samsung booth, the soon to be released Galaxy S4 is here. And, since I've not yet seen the S4 for myself, I spent a few minutes taking a look.

Fear not, for we are working on a new Android Central app

Android Central App
We've mentioned this in the forums and teased a little bit on Google+, but it deserves mention here: Yes, we're hard at work on a new Android Central app.
The short version is that our old app was never really up to snuff (and frankly probably never should have happened in the first place). We unpublished it some time ago. But we can't do anything about folks who still have it installed, except to say uninstall it and hang tight. Something much better is on the way.
We don't have any ETAs to give yet, but I can say things are progressing nicely, and this new app has far more features (and far less ad spam) than the old one.
See my post in our forums for a more detailed explanation of the old app, our new app, and better things to come.

[NSFW] Android adult app store MiKandi bares even more (and does it better) in Version 4

MiKandi

New UI, more content and faster performance all come to one of Android's premier adult apps

MiKandi -- one of the earlier adult app stores for Android -- this week was updated to Version 4, bringing with it a new user interface, improved performance, and more of that old fashion adult fun that doesn't quite fit on Google Play.
Jen McEwen, MiKandi's chief marketing officer, tell us that new look bares more than ever before. "MiKandi is the Las Vegas of app stores," McEwen told Android Central by e-mail. "It’s a fun, sexy playground for adults. With MiKandi V4, we take full advantage of the limited space on every device by displaying more than twice as much content than previous versions. Now browsing and discovering adult apps is like walking down the Las Vegas Strip. Everywhere you turn is a visual feast."
